For example if we put down the fraction of a 10 it would be simply expressed as 0.1 and if it is a fraction of a 100, it would be written as 0.01 and so on and so forth.

It should also be specially noted that there cannot be a fraction without a decimal, now that decimal could be “0” or zero but it has to be in the format or it would be difficult to understand when someone looks at the series of digits in a number to comprehend a fraction without a decimal.

It would be difficult and even the calculator, computer and any other aid that we would use would give a decimal and then a fraction. What the fraction is would depend on the denominator.

Another simple way of looking at it would be when we write a value of something that we would buy and if there is a discount or a special price you could have a value with decimals and fractions.

For instance if we consider the value “US $, 141.54 cents”, and here the ‘cents” would be the fraction, where the denominator is 100. One dollar would be equivalent to 100 cents, which means that there are 100 cents to a dollar and if any part thereof is taken, it will out of that 100 cents.

In the above example of “US $, 141.54 cents” the “54 cents” are really 54 parts out of 100 parts which we would refer to as a fraction.

This aspect of decimals and fractions are necessary as in the above example if not which we would not have cents at all and it would be a case of rounding it up to only the dollar value of “US $ 141” and forget about all the cents that would be not logical due to the fact that there are cents too in our currency.

This could also be very importantly seen when we buy something in weight where there are two figures that would be pertinent to the sale, which are the pounds and the ounces or the kilograms and the grams.

It is 1000 grams that make a kilogram and when we buy the factor that comes into play is the quantity of grams and the quantity of kilograms, the kilograms being the decimal.

This changes when we buy something in pounds and this is a bit tricky where the amount of the fraction changes due to the fact that the quantity of ounces in a pound is not the usual digits of 100’s and 1000’s but as there are 16 ounces to the pound with the fraction is of 16 ounces.
