GPA Calculator
GPA Calculator
This GPA calculator tool is a free resource that will easily calculate your grade point average (GPA).
Whether for school or college, it’s important to understand your GPA so you know how well your average score is on your courses. This shows how high or low they are on average, which can then be used to asses your suitability for a college course or to ensure you are meeting expectations on a current course.
Grade Point Average (GPA) Calculator
What is a GPA Calculator?
A GPA calculator is used to calculate your current grade point average based on your grades from a specific period. It can be used to calculate a GPA across the entire academic year, such as your final year of high school, or over a single semester at college.
It’s a relatively straight-forward tool to use, with a GPA calculator needing some basic information regarding your grades.
As each grading system differs around the world, the grades used aren’t the same, with some countries like the USA using lettering systems. It’s common in Europe for grades to be numerical, but a calculator can use any type of grading system to work out the GPA.
Regardless of the grading type, your GPA is calculated into a corresponding quality point. These quality points remain almost identical in every country, usually ranging from 0 to 4 or being a multiple of 4 (e.g. 8 or 16)
For instance, if you are based in the US then A is the highest grade from a course, being the equivalent of a 4 GPA.
However, your entire GPA is an average, so you must include grades for all courses, which are added and then divided by the number of courses taken. The resulting number is your grade point average.
How the GPA Calculator Works
This tool is simple to use. You only need your course grades and credit/hours, both of which are provided throughout the academic year. If you are unsure of your current grades and credits, ask a lecturer/professor/teacher of the relative course.
The GPA calculator works out your GPA using a simple formula - your grade points divided by the credits/hours. To make things easier to organise, you can also add the name of each course, which should help identify what classes need to be worked on to increase your GPA.
If you don’t have your current grade for a course, then simply make a rough estimate.
Put your letter grade into the appropriate column, including grades for each class. Grades range from F to A+, reaching 0 to 4.0 on the GPA scale.
Now, enter your credit for the respective grade. For instance, if you have an A in a course that is worth 4 credits then enter four in the field next to the grade. If calculating a high school GPA, weighted classes are worth additional points whereas unweighted classes have no additional points included.
Repeat this step for all classes. You can calculate over a single semester or an entire academic year, just make sure you use the correct grades and credits/hours for each one.
